That's it. The end of yet another trilogy. Come to think of it, this is the end of a trilogy of trilogies.

PREVIOUSLY, ON STAR WARS
Let me get this straight, I loved The Force Awakens, which I've rewatched a couple of days ago. It is fresh, fun, cool and most importantly, recaptures the magic of the original trilogy – which itself is magical.
I thought J.J. Abrams did a wonderful job, everything felt alive and true. That was really profound.
Then, The Last Jedi was very interesting and while not as good its predecessor, it took risks which did not all paid off but, at least, it was a true film on its own.

THE LOST MAGIC
Which brings me to The Rise of Skywalker. I went into the movie theater knowing virtually nothing about the film. Or, actually, knowing too much already. While I haven't watched any trailer, I saw Lando Calrissian on the poster. And then I saw on a couple of headlines that Senator slash Emperor Palpatine would be back, which definitely made me feel odd.

PALPATINE
Why bring Emperor Palpatine? I gave the movie the benefit of the doubt and was surprised to see his name appearing in the first text presentation of the film. So... let me get this straight, the key to this new trilogy, the entire climax, is to kill Palpatine? Seriously?

PULL THE STRINGS!
I liked the darkness of the film, especially in the opening scene. That dark planet was as cool as coolness itself. Going inside the crashed Death Star? Sublime! Going inside the house of Luke Skywalker? So cool! But that was pretty much it. The Rise of Skywalker is style over substance. I never felt the same way I felt in the first two films of this trilogy. Everything felt fabricated and... not true. Filmmaker J.J. Abrams pulls the strings and, this time, we can see those. It worked pretty well in The Force Awakens, but here, it fails, a lot.

ROSE
What is great is that the producers learned the lesson from The Last Jedi and reduced the character of Rose to its minimum. Also, she got a new costume which made her look way less annoying.

CHARLIE
I simply hated to see Dominic Monaghan in a small role. What is really ironic is that his character appears... in a jungle. This felt like a crossover between LOST and Star Wars and completely out of place. I know it's unfair to the actor, but LOST was that popular that obviously everyone will think like myself – my girlfriend's reaction said it all: "What?!"

KILL ME, I KILL YOU, SAVE ME, I SAVE YOU
What I did not like as well was the countless times Rey and Ben fought each other in this film, then killed each others, then saved each others, then saved each others again. This was so much that I felt bad for the audience and could read their mind: this is too much. We crossed the barriers of scifi too much. There was no more science in fiction.

NO ONE DIES AND WE GET NO RESOLUTION
Since this was the last film of the trilogy, it would have been a perfect time to actually kill one of the three main characters from the resistance. Rey, Poe and Finn all live at the end of the film.
But most importantly, and I'll end my review here, we never got the chance to witness the climax of the relation between Rey and Finn. That is very, very sad, as their chemistry worked like magic in the first film. But since then, they have been separated by the story and I think this was a major mistake. They should have been reunited in the third film and in a way, they never were.

VERDICT
Each film of this new trilogy was worse than the previous. You can sense that J.J. Abrams loved the original material and did his best to make a great conclusion. Unfortunately, there were not so many risks taken, and by following too much the original work, he lost his way in his journey.
I give it 4 out of 10. Average.
