Masochisticly superb
By Jack Anderson on November 9, 2019

Super Ghouls 'N Ghosts is an excruciatingly difficult game. Not only that, you must be a masochist in order to appreciate it. The game is so difficult that I will simply rate it as impossible. Let me give you a metaphor. The so-called "Beginner" mode is like if you were given a violin and were supposed to play Vivaldi's Four Seasons. You can choose to start with up to nine lives, but you could receive 90 or even 900, that will still not be enough to finish this game.

You see, the most awesomely f***ed up thing of this game is that even if you would be able to go past all the super hard levels, there is a catch that you'll probably never see in any other game, which, to be honest, make it part of the Super Ghouls 'N Ghosts legend. The catch is that when you "finish" the game, that b**ch of a princess is telling you that actually, in order to defeat the final boss, you'll have to go back to the very beginning, and find a bracelet, which will give you the ability to fight the final boss. Wait, what?! Yes, you read it right. Once you complete the impossible game, the designers give you a big FU sign and ask you to do it again. Then only you'll be able to fight the last boss and win the game.

Then the question remains, is it a good game? You bet! It's really terrific. The controller is great, as you have the ability to do a double jump, which is simply sublime. I loved that concept in any game.
Then, one concern, like in Castlevania, is that when you are being hit, you are thrown away. Therefore, if you sit near a pit, good riddance. I think that this is too difficult and would have much preferred being "blinkingly transparent" for a couple of seconds instead.

I give it 8 out of 10. A superbly difficult classic of a game.

(Apologies, I invented new words in this review, probably not a good thing to do.)
