Every hundred years, the dark vampire known as Dracula resurrects and terrorizes the land. A vampire hunter named Simon Belmont bravely ventures into the Count's mansion in order to defeat him. Along the way he'll have to defeat skeletons, bats, fishmen, medusa heads and other evil creatures.

Castlevania is a side-scrolling platform action game. The player takes the role of Simon Belmont, who is able to jump and crack his whip directly in front of him. Power-ups can be obtained by defeating enemies or by whipping candles that appear in the castle. One such power-up increases the power and length of Simon's whip. Different weapons can be gathered which consume hearts when used, these hearts can also be collected from monsters and candles. Additionally, some walls will hide secrets such as the health-restorative turkey or the Double and Triple shot abilities for the weapons Simon has collected. At the end of each section of the castle is a boss, which must be defeated. Progression through the castle eventually leads to a confrontation with Count Dracula himself.

An impossibly difficult game with a catchy soundtrack
By Jack Anderson on November 7, 2019

I strongly believe that video games creators in the 80's hated kids. The reason I'm obviously ironically saying that is that there were game that were so difficult and frustrating. This is an era before you could save a game, let alone auto-save. An era where you were all alone in front of your CRT TV screen, with no help from anyone but your mind. Cannot fight a boss? Not possible to find the tips on the Internet, nope. In a way, this was a true quest, similar to the one from Simon Belmont, the hero of this game.

Released in 1986, Castlevania, which I discover 33 years after its release, is a difficult game. Even with the ability to save whenever I wanted (thank you my dear emulator), it took me lots of time to fight some of the bosses. The entire time, I kept thinking of these poor kids from the l ate 80's, who had to fight the good fight for days and probably never witnessed the end of the game, as many bosses are so damn hard that I might call this game impossible to complete. I mean, you can for instance go up the stairs, but if you jump back in, you die. That's it. Another one that is quite fun, there are about four separate pikes that come from the ceiling. Simply touch them and that's it, you are dead. Also, when you are hit, you are thrown back and if you are in front of a pit, that's it, good riddance to you. There are moments where it's simply too much and I think it goes against the quality of the game. I believe there is a fine balance between a game being difficult and a game being frustratingly impossible to play. I believe this game is the latter.

I seriously do not get the point of hitting candles and get hearts. And most importantly, even after completing the game, I still do not understand the difference between the hearts and the life bar from the top left. I really do not understand what was the point of the hearts.

Back to the game, the gameplay is obviously very basic for a game released at that time, but the game is still very fun.

Meanwhile, the soundtrack is really good and some of the tunes are really putting you into an immersive experience.

Still, I was not convinced by the dark aspect, in a sense that there were no real original characters that I thought were quite original. A copy of the Frankenstein creature, a few mummies, I get the idea but I don't think the game was iconic and original enough. Probably the fans of the Castlevania saga will think I'm wrong and you know what? They'll probably be right.

Rating a video game from the 80's is not the same as rating a game from today, as you have to keep in mind the technical limitations of the producers at the time. Therefore, I will give this game a solid 7 out of 10. Very good.
