A great copy-paste sequel
By Jack Anderson on September 4, 2017

"Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets" is almost the same book as its predecessor, "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone".
In both books:
- Harry Potter starts his journey by the Dursleys,
- Harry is having trouble going to Hogwarts,
- We are being led to think that one of the secondary characters is behind it (Snape in the first and Hagrid in the second),
- Harry is going to the forbidden forest and facing a dark situation,
- Voldemort is behind the all story,
- Voldemort is acting throughout someone else,
- A Deux Ex Machina appears at the very end, Dumbledore in the first, Dumbledore's bird (Fawks) in the second,
- Voldemort loses,
- Dumbledore is giving huge extra points to Griffindore,
- Griffindore wins the yearly contest.

So, structure-wise, "Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets" is not only similar, but really a copy-paste of the first book. J.K. Rowling simply reused the same magic potion of the first book and applied it to this one.
The result is still quite positive. It is so similar to the first book that it is logically getting the same kind of review.

The difference is that the plot and hence resolution of this book are more complex than in "Philosopher's Stone", which is positive, although it can be sometimes a bit hard to remember all the sub-plots.

This novel introduces two new characters, Dobby and Gilderoy Lockart. While the first one (Dobby) is terribly childishly annoying and hopefully just around in two scenes, the second (Lockhart) is irresistibly funny! Every single of his apparitions is simply hilarious!

Meanwhile, the main theme of the book is excellent: mudblood/half-blood/full blood.

To summarize, "Chamber of Secrets" is, like the first book, a great and fun read. It is a delight to find a new adventure with Harry, Ron, Hermione and all the characters we have come to love.

I give "Chamber of Secrets" a 7 (Superb!), even though very similar to its predecessor, it is a excellent book.
At the time of this review, I haven't read the next Harry Potter books and clearly hope that the next ones will push the boundaries of the series and reinvent themselves. If not, I will feel as if those books are only cluedo at Hogwarts.
